1913: Seeds of Conflict

Historical Characters

Nissim Malul

Nissim Malul

Nissim Malul was a Sephardic Jew from Tunisia. He was a historian, writer and journalist who advocated Jewish-Arab coexistence in the Ottoman Empire and advocated that Jews learn Arabic. He also wrote about Zionism in the Arab press and translated Arabic publications in Hebrew.

If we desire to root ourselves here in the mode of the land of the past and of the future, then we must learn the language of the land and think in it more than we do in other languages

Those who speak out against learning Arabic…do not understand nationalism other than in name. There is no necessary condition for the nationalist to know his language— the nationalist is a nationalist in his feelings, but not in his language…

Malul reading Arabic Newspaper: The threat is enormous. They have purchased most of our lands, commerce and industry are already in their hands. They are conquering the agriculture and will later conquer all the rest – and you will remain without a country to reside in.

I would like to translate this book into Hebrew so that our brethren will see the extent of our Arab enemies’ hatred.’
