1913: Seeds of Conflict

Historical Characters

Manya Shochat

Manya Shochat was a Russian Jewish political activist who came to Palestine in 1882 with BILU. She was one of the leaders of the collective settlement movement in Palestine, the Kvutazah, which later became the Kibbutz.

FROM THE FILM …

Shochat (Hebrew): This has been the happiest year of my life, for all of us, these were beautiful days. We felt that our experiment would be a model for future farmers working this land. We believed we were laying a foundation of collective work for the future of our children.

Shochat (Hebrew): We have overcome any doubts and fears about living and working collectively on the land. This communal lifestyle has given us the strength and pride of nationhood.
